Back in March, my blogging friend Leslie started a series called “Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone” to start documenting the things she does that make her uncomfortable or that scare her. I’m a little behind the curve here, but I’m diving in this month.

The concepts of bravery and fear have been coming up a lot in my life lately. If you follow me on Instagram, then you saw that I started a devotional based on Annie F. Downs’ book 100 Days to BraveI’ve also started listening to Ruth Soukup’s podcast, Do It Scared. Between both of those things, I’ve really started to look at what I’ve always wanted to do but have been too scared to do. By joining this monthly linkup, I hope that I will be encouraged to do those things, both large and small.

One theme that will probably come up over and over in the course of this series is me working on becoming a full-time writer. That is my ultimate career goal and dream job, but honestly, I’m terrified of leaving a stable, steady career to do something that is completely in my own hands. I started small this month by applying for a couple of writing jobs – one was a pretty huge one that I don’t think I got, and one was a little smaller that is showing some promise. It may not seem earth-shattering to anyone, but it’s a step in the right direction for me!

I don’t know what else I’ll end up doing to step out of my comfort zone. Maybe I need to make a list of ideas in my planner! 😉

I would love to hear what you have done to break out of your comfort zone. Leave me a comment and inspire me to be brave!

I am Amber. Amber I am. I like to write things that sound like a Dr. Seuss book, evidently.

  1. Yay for working toward becoming a fulltime writer. That is one of my big goals that I keep putting off for someday. Then I read Pat’s comfort zone post this morning and was reminded that today IS someday. We have to do this, girl! High five. Let’s support each other and make this happen.

As for other ways to step out of your comfort zone, I think they will begin to present themselves. Are there things you put off doing because you feel unconfident about whatever it is. Or timid. Or uncertain? Those are the things I am seeing all over the place. Of course, I am 60, shy and a former librarian which doesn’t translate into the boldest dare devil in the world. Thanks for joining me!

  2. Amber, I’ve also been inspired by Leslie to step out of my comfort zone. This week I went car shopping and bought a car, by myself. You would think as a 50+ very independent woman that would be “easy to do”. But actually walking in, doing the test drives, and haggling for the best price was all very uncomfortable by myself. But I did it.

Last year was taking swim lessons…which I had put off for years. I realized I was afraid to put my head under water! My next one… contacting a publisher on my drafted book.

Even though I’ve proclaimed Today is Someday…. I still put things off. I had many, many years of delayed gratification, of saying I’ll do it someday. New behaviors are hard to create. The fact that you applied for some writing jobs – YEAH! Small steps but huge ones as well. Congrats on doing that.
